December

Preparations for Christmas dominated the month, with Teresa, as ever, planning the presents, meals and activities to make the most of the holiday break, with both Helen and Jay expected at home for a few days.

No problems with the weather this year, so routine activities such as Roger’s bowls and Teresa’s and Jay’s skating continued unaffected throughout the month.  Teresa finished her second course of lessons on Tuesday 10.

On Saturday 7 we bought a Christmas tree from a local farm, though we waited until nearer Christmas before putting it up.  But gradually decorations emerged from the loft and presents were wrapped to take their place underneath it.

We also had the piano tuned for the first time for some years in preparation for our little Christmas concert.

On Friday 13 Teresa went to see Helen in London,  where they spent the afternoon taking in the Christmas sights and the shops.

On the weekend of 14-15 Jay took part in the Christmas show at the Oxford Ice Rink, ‘Fairytales on Ice’, tableaux of popular fairy tales based mainly on the Disney versions.  The starring roles were taken by a number of professional and leading competition skaters, backed by many of the more competent local skaters.  On Sunday Roger and Teresa attended the afternoon performance.

On Tuesday 17 Teresa went to the nativity play at the Holy Apostles playgroup in Cheltenham, where she used to work, and was made to feel very welcome as ever.

Jay arrived back home on Wednesday 18 and Helen on Saturday 21.  On Sunday 22 Teresa, Helen and Jay went to the crib service at the local church, following which we all settled in at home for the Christmas celebrations – meals, games and presents.

Helen returned to London on Sunday29, but Jay saw in the New Year with us this time, with a celebratory midnight drink and a somewhat under-rehearsed rendition of ‘The Day Dawn’ followed by ‘The Cross Reel’.
