AUTUMN QUIZ

RESULTS

Thank you for all your entries.  It was tight at the top, but the winners were:

Gold – Bill with 48 points

Silver – Mike with 47

Bronze – Keith with 44

There were four others with scores of over forty, so it was a close run thing, with Sue and Chris and Mike just a point behind in joint fourth.

Here are the answers I was looking for:

1.     Dudley, in the West Midlands

2.     Chris Moyles

  1. The Liberal Democrats in Brighton [some of you answered while Labour was in Blackpool and forgot the Lib Dems had already met]

4.     To clear the autumn leaves

5.     Gerhard Schröder (SPD) and Edmund Stoiber (CDU/CSU)

6.     Equinox

7.     Indian summer

8.     Harvest moon

  1. Chlorophyll [late in the year, there is not enough light or water for photosynthesis so the green chlorophyll disappears from the leaves and we see the underlying yellow, orange and brown colours instead]
  2. Autumn gentian (or felwort) [autumn gentian needed for 2 points – there are other members of the gentian family which are different in appearance]

11.                        Halloween

12.                        Robert Catesby

13.                        Black Wednesday, when, after a massive run on sterling, the UK left the European exchange rate mechanism

14.                        The October Revolution [one point for the Bolshevik Revolution]

15.                        14 October

16.  Michaelmas Day, St Michael’s Day, is one of the four financial quarter days in England and falls on 29 September [some of you forgot to say that it was a quarter day and/or a saint’s day, for the second point]

17.                        Antonio Vivaldi

18.                        John Keats

19.                        Johnny Mercer (lyrics) and Joseph Kosma (music)

20.                        The American Civil War (1861 – 1865)

21.                        Argenteuil, near Paris

22.                        The Ryder Cup (golf match)

23.                        Colombo, Sri Lanka [Sri Lanka enough for the points]

24.                        Thailand.  Great Britain won 3 – 2

25.                        Jungle fever
