August

On Friday 6  Overbury Bowls Club held its Open Evening:  fine weather, a good attendance and one or two new members as a result.  The competitive leagues drew to a close.  In the Triples League, Overbury were in contention for the Runners up spot until the last match, but could not quite make it.  There was a further Fun Day on Sunday 22 which Roger’s rink was lucky enough to win.

On 12  Helen came home for a long weekend to celebrate her and Roger’s birthdays.  During her stay we revisited Beckford church* and looked round Broadway one morning.

Roger had some good presents, including some very readable books, table mats, Oxford memorabilia, wine and chocolates.  But the pièce de résistance, destined to become a family heirloom, was a crossword by the world famous setter Araucaria*, especially compiled for Roger by the great man, and based on themes supplied by Teresa and the girls.

We decided to pursue the flat for Jay that we had seen:  though it was over budget, we were beginning to see that the market for suitable properties was very limited in that area of Oxford.   Tying down the details took a bit of time – mainly because Roger needed to be involved as guarantor – but we visited the agents on  25 to sign the contracts, though she would not take possession until the following month.

Teresa again entered the Winchcombe show and was placed in most of the cooking classes she entered.  Strangely, however, she had to surrender the strawberry jam cup she had won for the last two years and her magnificent loaf, which we thought would be a shoo-in, was totally overlooked in favour of some miniscule but worthy granary offerings.
