On Sunday 3 Teresa, Helen and Jay met up in Oxford to go to Gaudy Sunday at Jay’s former college, Lady Margaret Hall.  A ‘gaudy’ is a formal dinner to which MAs of the college are invited in rotation according to their year of matriculation.  This takes place on Saturday evening and those attending stay in college for the night.  On Sunday there is a series of talks and exhibitions, followed by a garden party in the afternoon, which all alumni are invited to attend.

They were blessed with warm sunny weather and had a pleasant afternoon enjoying the college grounds and the afternoon tea.

We started our home grown (mainly in tubs on the patio) potatoes and very good they were too, but we made a note in the diary to try them earlier next year.  We had used a new variety, which had matured without us realising, so they needed to be lifted and eaten quite quickly.

On Sunday 10, a bowls club barbecue was held at the home and gardens of two of our members, providing a wonderful setting and facilities, while club members, as ever, laid on excellent and plentiful barbecue fare.  As we were also blessed with warm sunny weather, it made for an idyllic afternoon.

On Friday 15, a sadder occasion for the club – the funeral at the Cheltenham Crematorium of a member who had been very active in the local community.  The chapel was filled to overflowing, and there was a large representation from bowling clubs in the county she had been involved with over the years.

On Sunday 17, it was Overbury’s turn to host the annual South Worcestershire Triples Tournament.  Though a damp weekend, the rain held off during the play, and the Overbury rink won the trophy.

Roger himself was unable to play any competitive bowls during the month.  Although the hip settled down after three weeks’ rest, another recurrent indisposition started up, being particularly troublesome in the afternoon and evening, so a further visit to the doctor was planned.

On Sunday 24 Teresa and Roger visited  Jay in Oxford, partly to see her skating at the ice rink where she is now having regular lessons, which she really enjoys.  It was Roger’s first visit since graduation day.
