October

The remarkable run of warm weather continued into early October and on Saturday 1 we actually had the new parasol and the barbecue out again – a real bonus after the poor summer.

On Wednesday 5 Mike and his mother made their annual visit, bearing generous gifts, and Teresa treated them to one of her superb lunches – a Beef Wellington this year, preceded by sea food starters and followed by a choice of sweets.

On Friday 7 we went to a bowls club quiz – a close run thing as two or three tables were in close contention all evening.  Ours and another table went into the last round level, and then scored equal points on that, so it depended on a tie-break question to which, for once, we knew the answer to win a small prize.

Since the end of last month Teresa has been taking advantage of special rates at the Barcelo Spa at the Lygon Arms in Broadway, giving access to all the spa facilities, which include swimming pool, Jacuzzi, sauna, gym and various fitness classes; there are complimentary toiletries in the showers and coffee in the lounge afterwards, plus use of the hotel car-park in the centre of Broadway.  Teresa has being going most days, and Helen and Juliet have also sampled it as a number of free guest passes are included.  After a certain number of visits she will qualify for a free meal in the hotel itself – Roger is standing by for that!

On Sunday 9 October we went to Taunton to see Mick and Pat for the first time for several years.  We left early to take advantage of the motorway at its quietest, stopping for coffee at the Gordano services near Bristol, before leaving the motorway at Burnham-on-Sea, where we spent a bracing hour on the sea front before proceeding.

Mick and Pat both looked well and we spent the day exchanging news and reminiscences.  Several other members of the family joined us for a splendid buffet lunch prepared by Pat.  All too soon it was time for tea and setting out on our return journey.

Our strategy for this proved to be flawed.  Having decided to avoid the busy motorway we found ourselves at the mercy of our satnav on a series of minor roads through Glastonbury and Wells, in mist, rain and gloom and a bewildering variation of speed limits.  As darkness fell in Bath, we made a break for home via Stroud and Cheltenham, slightly more familiar territory, arriving in Toddington after a non-stop drive of over three and a half hours.

We both had our flu jab this year, though, coincidentally or not, Teresa had some flu-like symptoms within hours of hers which dragged on for a week or so.

Jay has been enjoying her ice-skating, which meant that she has been home less often, but we visited Oxford on 16 and 29 to help her with various chores.
