The
Olympic torch passed through Broadway on Sunday 1. Teresa made good use of her membership of the
Lygon Arms spa, arriving early to beat the traffic, and then having a swim and
coffee. As the hotel and car-park are in
the middle of Broadway, when the time approached, she stepped out into a prime
position in the main street. She had a
good view of the cavalcade and was able to get some excellent photographs as it
passed.

She
posted one of her pictures on Twitter, and ITV Central News asked to use it on
their web-site. Unfortunately, she had
her phone off by then, so they used another instead.
On Tuesday 3 we visited
Burford: Teresa had long promised
herself a look round the village and Roger had recently spotted that there was
a bowls shop in nearby Minster Lovell.
The latter was our first call, Roger needing urgently to replace some
very worn shoes and clothing.

The
church of St John the Baptist in Burford dates back to Norman times, but the
original building has been so much added to over the years, so that it is
almost like several churches in one, with side by side naves and multiple side
chapels inside. We looked in at some of
the shops in the main street and noted the site of one of the murders in the
Inspector Morse series.

We
remembered to lift our new potatoes on the patio earlier this year, for a
barbecue at the end of June for the first time and by mid-July we had finished
them – a tastier but smaller crop than last year.
Another benefit of Teresa’s
membership of the spa is that the loyalty card offers generous rewards as the
number of visits mounts, with the top reward for 100 visits being dinner for
two in the hotel restaurant. Eschewing
all the smaller awards, Teresa finally reached this goal, and on Thursday 12 we
presented ourselves. Though restricted
to the table d’hòte menu, the food was a cut above our normal fare and the
staff were friendly and helpful.

Overbury
Bowling Club celebrated its 50th Anniversary on Sunday 15 July. A large number of members enjoyed a couple of
hours of fun bowls, followed by a celebratory drink and a piece of a splendid
anniversary cake made by one of the members.
Otherwise a busy month for matches and competitions, though by the end
of the month Roger’s interest had ended in all but one of the latter. In the inter-club men’s triples league, the
Overbury team challenged successfully until the end of the month, when a
comprehensive defeat to our nearest rivals left us trailing by several points.
Jay’s
current interest in skating means that she likes to stay in Oxford at the weekend,
so we continue to visit her there regularly.
