June

Both Helen and Jay were home for the Bank Holiday weekend at the start of the month, and we all attended the Toddington village Jubilee party in the village hall on Saturday 2.

An enterprising and artistic local resident had decorated our roundabout with a crown and attendant guardsmen.

There was bring and share food in the village hall and family games in the grounds.  Over 150 villagers attended and the weather stayed dry and sunny, if a little cool for the time of year.

On Monday 24 Roger had his annual dental check-up.  Having been suffering pains in both upper and lower jaw for some weeks, he feared the worst, so was mightily relieved to hear that just three fillings needed re-doing.  They were done on the spot with very little drilling and this appears to have done the trick.

We were lucky in the Wimbledon draw this year, receiving two Centre Court tickets for the first Wednesday in a court side block just to the left of the Royal Box.

On Wednesday 27 Teresa was off by 7.00 am  to meet up with Helen at Paddington and they arrived at Wimbledon early to look round the outside courts, but, of course, rain set in at lunch-time, and play was interrupted.  On Centre Court, however, the roof was closed and they saw a full day’s play.

Helen on the main concourse … Teresa with her programme

The first match was Roger Federer, Helen’s favourite player.  Though it was short, Helen was pleased to see him winning.  Next, and the best match of the day, was the three set thriller which saw the seventh seed Caroline Wozniacki knocked out by the unseeded Tamira Paszek.  Finally, top seed Novak Djokovic started his match, and Helen was able to stay until close of play.

Teresa had to leave a little earlier, of course.  Because of a restricted rail timetable that day, she decided to get off at Oxford, where Jay met her, and Teresa drove Fizzy home, arriving at 11.30 pm – a long but enjoyable day.

Meanwhile, Roger had watched much of the tennis at home, and, as expected, saw Teresa and Helen appear regularly in the background as the camera showed the crowd, captured here on screen, thanks to Uncle Mick.
