January

The mild, wet and windy weather again dominated the month, though there were one or two frosty nights – enough to make some of our early drives to Oxford a little icy.

On Saturday 25 we spent an hour recording birds in the garden for the annual RSPB survey.

On Wednesday 29 Roger played short mat bowls at Moreton-in-Marsh – his first experience of the game away from Toddington.  It was a friendly game in return for a Moreton’s rink visiting Toddington a fortnight earlier.

The Overbury Bowling Club annual dinner was held on Friday 31 at the Rising Sun Hotel, Cleeve Hill near Cheltenham.  We had missed last year’s dinner, so this was our first experience of a new venue.  It was a most successful evening, with a substantial proportion of the membership turning out on a wet and windy evening.  The dining room had spectacular views over Cheltenham and Bishop’s Cleeve, with unexpected special effects when a power cut dowsed all the lights in the valley below us.  The food itself, and the service, could not be faulted, with five courses laid on for a very reasonable charge.
