September

Between  30 August and 6 September, Teresa and Helen had a short holiday in the USA, travelling by rail from Boston to San Francisco.  They left Heathrow early on Wednesday 31, arriving in Boston in the afternoon local time.  They had pre-booked dinner in the Union Oyster House, allegedly the oldest restaurant in America, and also a hotel for their overnight stay.  After a morning in Boston, on Thursday 1 they took a train to Chicago, transferring  the following day to the Californian Zephyr.  This popular tourist train takes passengers across the great plains and the Rocky Mountains, before dropping down through the Sierra Nevada to the Bay of California.  It arrived in San Francisco on Sunday 4, where they spent a night and a morning.  They boarded their return flight on Monday 5, landing at Heathrow the following morning.  Roger and Jay picked up the travellers from Moreton station just after lunch on Tuesday 6.

Teresa and Helen planned the whole trip from scratch, making their own bookings for flights, trains, hotels and restaurants, and everything went perfectly to plan, leaving them with a wealth of memories to savour and travellers’ tales to tell.  Here are just a few of their experiences.

Back at home, on Saturday 3 Roger and Juliet spent a day in Malvern, where they saw The Shakespeare Revue at the Malvern Festival Theatre, a series of sketches providing a humorous take on the bard and his works.  The following day Juliet led an assault on the accumulation of junk building up in the garage and succeeded in assembling a large pile of boxes and black bags for disposal at the local recycling facility, previously known as the tip.

Helen came home on Friday 16 for a long weekend, when we heard more about Teresa’s and her American experiences and viewed some of the spectacular photographs.

Roger’s outdoor bowls season drew to end, but not before he had a chance to wear this humorous birthday present:

The closing of the green took place on Sunday 18, with bowling for 36 members, followed by the presentation of prizes for the club competitions and a ‘bring and share’ tea.  Indoor bowling at nearby Littleton started ten days later.
