April

At the beginning of the month Roger started to feel twinges in the hip, which developed within a week to pains from the lower back all down the right leg, at the worst first thing in the morning.  A visit to the doctor provided reassurance that the cause was not circulation problems, but there was no magic cure – just some gentle exercises and painkillers.  The most likely cause was sciatica, a trapped nerve in the spine, which often puts itself right after a couple of months.  It is beneficial to keep active, within moderation.

Fortunately, the discomfort did not prevent Roger starting outdoor bowling on Monday 17, when Overbury Bowling Club opened its green.  Friendly matches started soon after.  There was also an Open Day for members and prospective members on Sunday 23.  Like most bowling clubs in the area, we are struggling to keep numbers up, threatening the programme of inter-club matches.  Thanks to the efforts of some energetic members in publicising our activities, some sixteen newcomers to the sport turned up on the day, a few of whom have since joined as members.

Early on Wednesday 19 Teresa and Jay flew off to the West Coast of the USA – a follow-up to Teresa and Helen’s trip last year.  They again used the train to travel along the coast and stayed a total of six nights in Los Angeles, Santa Monica and San Francisco, the latter again the favourite.  Helen joined Roger at home for a few days while they were away.
