Winchcombe Horse Show

22 May 2005

This time last year, Jay spent a morning at the Winchcombe Horse Show at Sudeley Castle, hoping against hope that one day she would be a pony owner, and able to take a full part in the event.  If she had been able to ride Mr Parker in the Clear Round arena, her prayers would have been answered.

This year, she went to Sudeley as an owner, and her ambitions were to be poignantly fulfilled.

The day started well enough.  Jay walked Clyde, with several others from her stables, down to Winchcombe, with Teresa roped in to drive slowly behind as protection for the little convoy.

On reaching the show ground, Jay entered the clear round competition, and Clyde duly sped round the course to win his rosette

Unfortunately, pride comes before a fall.  Jay had entered two events for 16 and under novices.  Arriving relatively late at the first event, and unable therefore to walk the course, Jay watched several competitors to see what was involved.  Very few of the riders managed to go clear, so, when Jay decided to go, she was confident enough to push Clyde on at a fair old pace.  Alas, at the third fence, disaster struck.  All went wrong and the fence, Clyde and Jay all went to ground in spectacular fashion, with Jay and Clyde sliding to a standstill several feet over the wet ground.

Clyde got up with a slight limp, which appeared not to be serious, but obviously could not be ridden again and had to be trailered back to the stables.  Jay was bruised and shaken, as much on Clyde’s account as her own.  But she bravely took responsibility – ‘I was trying to push him too hard’ – and pulled herself together.

It’s always important in these cases to get straight back in the saddle.  Luckily, a kind friend, who was riding Mr Parker for the day, offered Jay a ride, and Jay gamely got back on and took him round the clear round course.  Confidence restored.

Clyde, meanwhile, is consoled by Teresa as he waits for his ride back to the stables, where we shall all be keeping a close eye on his poor bruised leg
