May

May proved to be cold, grey and occasionally wet until the Bank Holiday weekend at the end of the month.  Roger had some chilly evenings on the bowling green, but the club teams got off to a good start for the season:  the Triples team won their first five matches.

On Wednesday 13 we went to a Christian Aid charity quiz at the Pheasant over the road.  With a bowling club friend, and a couple who joined our table for the evening, we came second.

On Thursday 14 we spent an interesting morning at the nearby Stanway House, where the BBC was filming for the next series of Antiques Roadshow.  Click below for details.

Antiques Roadshow

Better weather arrived towards the end of the month, and Teresa several times visited the GWR in Toddington, where they were holding a Festival of Steam, including the visit of the Hogwarts Express, apparently for the first time at a private heritage railway.  And, as if that weren’t enough, it was joined by the world’s largest transportable concert organ:  that we just had to see (and hear).

Here is Roger in front of the aforementioned organ, as we awaited the arrival of the Hogwarts Express.

Platform 9¾ had been magically transported from King’s Cross.  Passengers began to fill the platform waiting to board.

The train pulls out for its first run of day.

Also prominent on the tracks that day were the City of Truro (below left) in the sidings, and 5526 – which provided a complementary shuttle service to Cheltenham.

City of Truro held the world speed record for steam back in 1904.

Hogwarts Castle’ is better known to steam enthusiasts as 5972 Olton Hall.

The good weather over the weekend of 24-25 meant that we belatedly set to work in the garden planting some potatoes, tomatoes and sundry flowers in various containers and small hastily prepared plots.

And by Sunday 21 the weather was warm enough for us to have our first barbecue of the year.
