August
Helen visited 9 – 13 for a few days and we celebrated her and Roger’s
birthday on Friday 10 by visiting Snowshill.
Later in the
day we had the birthday cake and Roger opened his presents, including a new
Anglepoise lamp, a weather station and velvet cushion for his study and several
books on his favourite subjects.
Before Helen returned on Monday 13, we went to Bourton-on-the-Water for
the first time for many years.
Thursday
16 August was A level results day and we went down to Jay’s school early. Oxford had not updated their UCAS entries by
the time we left, leading to some last minute trepidation, but we were
delighted to find that Jay had achieved the three As needed for her offer of a
place at Lady Margaret Hall to be confirmed.
Well done Jay!

Confirmation
from UCAS followed (see above). Teresa
had prepared a goody bag of rewards in anticipation, which were opened when we
got back home, and the following day we went to the nearest Beefeater
restaurant for Jay’s favourite meal.
Roger’s
bowls season was rapidly drawing to an end:
there were a couple of ‘fun days’ on Sunday 19 and on Bank Holiday Monday,
both enjoying good weather.
On Monday
13 Roger played in the final of the club 100 Up competition, losing on the
deciding extra end after both players reached 100 points simultaneously.
Bank
Holiday Monday was also the day of the annual Winchcombe show. Teresa upped the number of her entries this
year after her successes last year (see August 2006
Diary). She was rewarded with no
fewer than four first prizes (including a coveted cup), plus two other places,
viz:
First Prize and the Park Farm
Preserves Cup for her Strawberry Jam

First Prizes for her Victoria
Sponge and Jar of Jelly (grape)
First Prize in the
photography class Reflections (
Second Prize for her Ginger
Cake
Third Prize for her Chutney
Her Chocolate Cake, Scones,
Loaf, Landscape photograph (Sunset) and two embroideries were unplaced this
year.
(This loaf was surely worth a prize!)
As a final treat of the summer for Jay, on Friday 31 we went to the
Finally,
we managed to grow a sunflower. Not one
of our own seedlings, which were all taken by slugs, but one of a few
replacements kindly given to Teresa by the owner of Clyde’s stables. Not in the same league as the ones we used to
get at Darkes Farm, but it’s a start.
